On the road for vinyl: Rainy night in Chicago

Chicago lived up to its name as the windy city and added rain for good measure.  So I ventured out anyway and navigated the Chicago train down to the Damen stop and walked around the Wicker Park neighborhood looking for my two destinations Reckless Records and Permanent Records over on W. Chicago.  By the way I ate dinner at Jerry's  Sandwiches and Beer and I highly recommend that place...sit at the bar if you can because they play and discuss good music.

Anyway, once I arrived at Reckless Records it was a warm and inviting stop.  Exactly what I had envisioned but some cool surprises as well.  As Pink Floyd's Meddle played overhead I looked through racks of new but mostly old records and daydreamed about where these records have travelled over their lifetime. I found a first issue of Jimmy Smith's The Boss, The Who's The Who By Numbers, and Graham Nash's Songs For BeginnersThey had put the Graham Nash record on the turntable and only made it through the first song when I asked if I could buy it and broke the sales girl's heart.  I gave her an out to keep it but she insisted...so thanks again...great store.
I tried to stop at Permanent Records but they closed early...maybe next time.

Reckless adds a cool note about the record

We're going on a field trip to see how a vinyl record is made

Make sure you have your permission slips signed and this will get you out of class for a day.  We're going on a field trip to see something actually be made in the USA.
Vinyl is a regular topic on Showbiz Kids so I thought I would continue in our self indulgent ways and take it upon myself to pull in videos that show how vinyl records are still made.  The first video is a little longer than the other two so don't get separated from the group.  As soon as the first video is done we'll move on to two recently reviewed albums on Showbiz and see how their vinyl recordings were made.  One is Circuital by My Morning Jacket and the other is The Whole Love by Wilco.

Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket gives a personal tour of the record pressing for Circuital at United Record Pressing

The Whole Love by Wilco being made at Furnace Manufacturing

On the turntable...Greetings from Asbury Park

Greetings from Asbury Park on vinyl has some unique features that you cant appreciate on compact disc.  As you can see in the photos above the album cover opens as if there's a postcard from Bruce and its attached to the front cover. Vinyl has many redeeming factors and the sound quality is also one of them.  This album sounds great on vinyl and it cost me $4.

I could go on and on about how much I like this album, but I'll let you read more here. I will say that "Spirit in the Night", "For You" and "Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street" happens to be some of my favorites.  The sound of the album reeks of the 70s and the northeast.  Of course the over talked about lyrics in "Blinded By The Light" is a part of this album and Bruce even said himself that this song didn't become popular until Manfred Mann changed a line in the lyrics to feminine hygiene products.  Of course we know that Bruce's lyrics were "cut loose like a deuce."

Take a look at the current Asbury Park and maybe investigate Bruce's history and love for this part of our country.  It did get hit by Irene but it appears that they have recovered.

Criminal Records in Atlanta is fighting to keep its doors open

Our economy's struggle weaves its way into every aspect of our life from our most important issues like jobs, home ownership, retirement and I could go on and on.  Of course retail stores are failing and the ones you really hate to see are the privately owned small business especially when they've survived for years and become familiar local landmarks.

Criminal Records is fighting to stay alive in Atlanta, Ga and may have to close its doors in November of this year.  As I have mentioned in previous entries I believe the fun and action of walking into a store to feel, see and shop for music is one of those experiences that shouldn't fade away.  Its easy to download music and there's certainly a place for it,but wouldn't it be a sterile experience if everything we eventually do is done by sitting in front of a computer?

I hope that anyone living in Atlanta will take a moment to go to Criminal Records and actually see, feel and experience the tangible objects of recorded music.  Even better...please go there and buy something!
Many folks have not ever seen a vinyl record and many that have been around may soon only be able to buy music online so think of going to any music store as a walk through an endangered animal.

Please read the article below from the Atlanta Journal & Atlanta Constitution on Criminal Records.

On the Road for Vinyl: Bristol,VA

Sessions 27 record store in  Bristol,VA
My love of vinyl has evolved into seeking out local records stores when I'm travelling and specifically if they have vinyl.  Maybe there has always been vinyl available but all signs point to the fact that there has been an upsurge in demand...thus more vinyl sold in stores!

Sessions 27 in Bristol,Va had been mentioned to me by my mother in law so last weekend we were in town and decided to check it out.  They carry new and used vinyl as well as CDs.

What an awesome record store! At first you might think there's not loads and loads of vinyl to look through, but as soon as you start flipping you'll notice that every single record is quality and popular stuff.  This record store does not junk itself up and waste time with just any records...it has the ones we're all looking for...or maybe just what I'm looking for.  Some examples are Ray Charles, The Who,Grateful Dead,The Beatles,Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.  These were in abundance and at some of the best prices I've ever seen.

When we were ready to check out they packaged all our records in these cardboard boxes to keep them safe.  I left with many great finds and will have a lot to listen to over the next few weeks, but I'll be back the next time we head up I-81 to Abingdon and I'm stopping in at Sessions 27!
Oh yeah...my wife has been looking all over Knoxville for Amy Winehouse's CD Back to Black and we couldn't find it anywhere.  Sessions 27 not only had Back to Black but had Amy's first CD Frank too! A little town like Bristol,VA showing some solid chops in music retail!

Here's their address and you can find them online here at their Facebook page
