Almost...New Music Tuesdays: Quadrophenia Director's Cut

Okay technically Quadrophenia Director's Cut will be released next Tuesday November 15th, but I'm already excited about it even if I cant afford to buy it...yet!  Christmas is just around the corner for anyone who is READING this?!

Some quick background...Quadrophenia is a cornerstone in The Who's musical lineage. The 1973 album spurred a movie and has influenced many bands and has always been a beacon of mod culture. Pete remarks that it is the work he is most proud. Here is some more insight to the creativity and background to the story line. Quadrophenia-wikipedia

Okay back to the stuff that will be released next week...Here is a link to Pete discussing the actual items in this remaster and just generally what it was all about.  Also there is a second video that shows the items in the box set Quadrophenia.

On the road for vinyl: Rainy night in Chicago

Chicago lived up to its name as the windy city and added rain for good measure.  So I ventured out anyway and navigated the Chicago train down to the Damen stop and walked around the Wicker Park neighborhood looking for my two destinations Reckless Records and Permanent Records over on W. Chicago.  By the way I ate dinner at Jerry's  Sandwiches and Beer and I highly recommend that place...sit at the bar if you can because they play and discuss good music.

Anyway, once I arrived at Reckless Records it was a warm and inviting stop.  Exactly what I had envisioned but some cool surprises as well.  As Pink Floyd's Meddle played overhead I looked through racks of new but mostly old records and daydreamed about where these records have travelled over their lifetime. I found a first issue of Jimmy Smith's The Boss, The Who's The Who By Numbers, and Graham Nash's Songs For BeginnersThey had put the Graham Nash record on the turntable and only made it through the first song when I asked if I could buy it and broke the sales girl's heart.  I gave her an out to keep it but she insisted...so thanks again...great store.
I tried to stop at Permanent Records but they closed early...maybe next time.

Reckless adds a cool note about the record

Future Quadrophenia remaster and bonus material on the horizon?

Newly remastered Quadrophenia on vinyl?  The 1996 remastered version revamped by its original remixer?  Who knows?  Either way here is a twitter entry by our windmilling friend Pete Townshend.      Pete Townshend twitter post 06/01/2011

"Won't Get Fooled Again" performance from The Kids Are Alright

If you want to see what real rock n' roll looks like and a band enjoying their music then watch this clip from The Who's 1979 rockumentary The Kids Are Alright.  Basically, the band didn't feel they had captured solid recorded versions of some of their hit songs, so at their own Shepperton Studios they filmed live recordings in front of a small audience.  Now when I say "audience" it was an audience made of close friends, special invitation and fellow musicians to the tune of 500 guests.  I believe...at a minimum the adult beverages had been free flowing and what originally started as a recording of a few songs became a full out concert due to the re-takes.
The first 50 seconds of video has some of my favorite Pete Townshend stage moves.  For the longest time I thought Pete had ripped his jacket because you can see black underneath his arm,but alas its only the late 70s fashion of his jacket.  However he has potential to have ripped everything in this performance between his stage slide and Hail Mary windmills.
At the 7:50 mark in the video Daltrey's scream erupts out of the smoke and lasers and then goes black intoTownshend's slo-mo power slide.  I'll warn you it will make you want to go burn a couch or stomp the gas pedal through the floorboard.  I only wish I could have been there in the audience.
